The Gekkos come for a visit

We had a treat in Room 4 and Room 5 today when we welcomed some gekkos in for a visit.  We heard all about how they live and what they eat. We then all had a turn at holding them.

SPECIAL VISITORS

Room 4 has some special visitors.  On Monday, whilst we were in assembly a strange house appeared in the Discovery Room.  We fetched Mrs Molloy who suggested our visitors could be Brounies, who live in the north of England, Wales and Scotland.

On Tuesday, we found a letter from the Brounies explaining why they had moved into the Discovery Room and tell us all about themselves.

There was much excitement and the children set to work replying to Morag and Lachlann's letter.

After much discussion, the children decided to use string (and a bit of adult help) to haul all their letters up to the front door of Morag and Lachlann's house.

They are eagerly awaiting a response.

Congratulations

We are so proud of Alex, Florence, Nikita, Ashlyn, Jack and Gary who have all learned to pedal by themselves today.

Edible Earth - YUMMY

We have been about Volcano's with Mrs Costello during in our Wednesday science sessions.   This week she explained to us what the inside of the earth is like and where lava comes from.

We made our own edible earths by using an edible silver ball as the solid core of the earth which we squashed into a marshmallow.  Next we dipped the marshmallow into chocolate and formed a hard crust just like the earth has.

The best part was when we cracked the chocolate, just like the earths crust does in and earthquake and volcano.  Then we got to eat them - yummy !

Stepping up our 'huts'

Some of the Room 4 children decided to have a go at stepping up their 'huts' today by using stick for support.  They worked very hard a binding the sticks with string and used cloths to cover them like tents and tepees.

Making a hut

Some children in Room 4 have enjoyed making 'huts' and 'dens' to  hide in.  They have used the old whanau mat.

They had a much fun tidying up, when some people decided to 'hitch' a ride back to
 Room 4

Pedal, pedal, pedal

As the weather is cooling Room 4 are heading to their bikes to practice for the Bikethon.  We have some amazing cyclists and our for those who can not ride a bike yet they are making great progress using the balance bikes.

Caritas and Rising Sea Levels

We were lucky to have a visit from Gemma from Caritas.

She explained to us how pollution is causing sea levels to rise.  She told us all about the people in Kiribati who have to keep building walls to try and keep the sea away from their houses.  This made us feel sad as we have friends at St. Joseph's School who come from Kiribati.

We used a role play to show how more cars make the temperature hotter which makes the waves higher.  It was a great way to learn.

Ash Wednesday

The whole of St. Joseph's School joined our Parish family to celebrate the beginning of Lent.  We were all very brave and respectful when we received the ashes from Mrs Clarke.
